In search of the lost frog of Colombia

19.11.10

'Colombia is frog central,' the expedition leader, Dr Robin Moore, says. 'With
nearly 800 recorded species, it almost certainly has the highest diversity.
Brazil officially has a few more, but it's seven times the size of Colombia
and more thoroughly surveyed. The exciting thing about this country is that
so much of it has yet to be explored.'

Like Moore, I am utterly obsessed with amphibians. I love their freaky
metamorphic lifestyle; I love their idiosyncratic biology and I love their
endless diversity. You can never get bored by frogs. I'm baffled by the
tyranny of 'cute', which sees the so-called charismatic megafauna command
the lion's share of attention and conservation money. You've seen one baby
panda, in my opinion, you've seen them all. But while the world drools over cuddly,
furry things, a whole class of extraordinary animals is being erased.

Globally, more than 2,000 species are threatened, including Britain's common
frog (the name is not supposed to be ironic) – disease has wiped out 80 per
cent of the population in the past 10 years. This is bad news not only for
frogs, but also for animals higher up the food chain, such as birds. It also
affects humans, especially in the tropics, where frogs play an important
role in keeping disease-carrying insects at bay.

has anyone noticed women buy into stupid news like octomom, while men are more interested in real news like?

Apr 07, 2009 by Buzz Killington | Posted in Gender & Women's Studies

economics, or world affairs.

And you can totally tell when you open up a peoples magazine saying Jen had an Affair!! OMG!!, every single ad is directed towards women. While you open up a magazine like Business week or the Economist (real news) its ads for watches viagra rogain.

Or even science magazines like popular science, national geographic, scientific magazine. All their ads are directed towards men since that's the vast majority of the readers.

How do women expect to gain more access to the mans world, when they don't even pay attention to the world.

I mean I know some women read these magazines the the vast vast majority just think its dumb and dorky. But how is Octomoms outrageous grocery list more interesting then macroeconomic policies that directly impact our lives?
Your face: You need to buy a thousand dollar pair of shoes? Atleast cars support more jobs like factory workers, and engineers.

Although im glad women are not like men in that aspect, id rather have a pretty girlfriend then one who buys gadgets

Oh Buzz Killington, you and your crazy ideas :D

My only real concern with Octomom is how she might be setting a dangerous precedent for those who would like to live off taxpayer money for the rest of their lives. I just blogged about companies who are cutting costs and retaining jobs at the same time. Is that "stupid news" to you?
Rio Madeira | Apr 07, 2009

A lot of women feel like they can't control the economy/science/politics anyway, so it's depressing. At least we can laugh at trainwrecks like Octomom and be glad we're not in her shoes. (How much could be on her grocery list anyway? Half the household is still on formula!)

******* Starlisha ******* | Apr 07, 2009

First off, that is a generalized statement, implying that ALL women are into celebrity gossip. NOT TRUE. That is a stereotype! That would be like me saying "has anyone noticed men are all into comic books while women read REAL literature?". That does not apply to all men (hopefully), therefore it is a useless observation. I have a subscription to National Geographic and watch the news on a daily basis. It is not possible to fit all women into a single single statement such as yours. I know that some women are interested in tabloids but SO ARE SOME MEN.
Audrey DeGrey | Apr 07, 2009

People who are into tabloids are idiots.

There's men out there who are just into all the BS, but I'd believe it's mainly women.

Idiotic women seem to love the gossip with celebs involved, while the idiotic men tend to just talk abut the people they know.

Eh =o/

Women are simple minded, obviously. - However, by listening to them and taking them seriously men themselves demonstrate a simple mindedness.

Why is it that the majority of law students and medical students are women? They're busy reading professional journals.

Buzz Kill, on the other hand, reads Y!A questions.
Lagniappe | Apr 08, 2009

Has anyone noticed how many misogynists make up the stupidest lies, then post them here?

It's just a big fat lie that ALL women are ONLY into soft news, or that ALL women care about celebrity "news" or read People.

I DO pay attention to the world, including science. It's NOT a man's world; I live here, too.
tehabwa | Apr 08, 2009

Have you ever noticed that men waste their time and money looking and buying things that they don't need and can't have like cars, and motorcycles, and guns while women are more practical with things like food, clothing, and other things we NEED?
Yourface | Apr 08, 2009

women like to gossip and they also like to hear gossip.Men don't gossip and we also hate hearing it that's why women always listen to j-lo brad pitt crap and madonna sh*t.

Men tend to be in touch with the world and all the things that are going on that's why we watch the news while women listen to E.T.(entertaiment tonight)
CANADA IS BETTER THAN U.S.A | Apr 09, 2009

It is a man's world for a reason...

and the reasons is women just don't care because they can't get the real news or politics or history.
Kiro | Apr 10, 2009

I admit that I enjoy reading tabloids from time to time but they are hardly anything I live for. I also read many other types of magazines. I like to read a variety of materials, not just a few.

I find it rather unfortunate that you would rather have a pretty girlfriend than one who is interested in gadgets. You want something that you can show off instead of a companion.

I'm not especially interested in Octomom and not really following the story aside from hoping that those babies will be properly cared for. My concern has always been about her children, including her six other ones.

I have a question about computer hacking....?

Jan 02, 2010 by lisa m | Posted in Security

Yesterday I got an e-mail from my best friend that she didn't send. It was for a Canadian prescription drug service where you could buy women's and men's viagra for real cheap. A few hours later, my best friend sends out an apology to everyone regarding the prior e-mail and said that she didn't send it and that she had Yahoo checking into it. I talked to her today, and she says that Yahoo can't do anything since there's no way to see who sent it or how they got her info. As we're talking, I remember back to a few nights ago when I was reading something online and the article vanished, the screen went blank, and then the article popped back up as if nothing ever happened. Now my friend doesn't have her own internet service, she goes to places that offer wi-fi where she can just borrow a signal.. and those are known to be dangerous since they're not secure and hackers can just jump on in. But... is it possible that my computer was hacked into, and now someone is seeing who my contacts are, and sending out e-mails under my friend's address? I checked my email and nothing out of the ordinary has been sent. I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary with my computer. Or is it more likely that her computer was the one that was hacked into? Is there a way to tell this? I know we have all sorts of stuff on ours... antiviral program, firewall... but either way all this makes me so paranoid....

Thanks

It was most likely her email that was hacked. The hacker then used her address book and email client to send out the spam to her contacts. She should scan her computer with her AV and a spyware scanner. Malwarebytes is the best one.
Being online at a public wifi spot is risky, as you said. Your friend should never access credit card or bank accounts while on a public spot. She can use PeerBlock to help with blocking unwanted connections. But sometimes the access point is hacked and she might log on to the hacker's wifi instead of the free one.
If she sees there are several access points with similar names, that's a sign that a hacker has set up a bogus access point to try to steal data from unsuspecting people logging on. She should always manually search for access points and then choose to connect, rather than have her computer automatically log on.

Is dating and a happy love life possible for men with erectile dysfunction (ED)?

Jul 25, 2007 by nakedlunch451 | Posted in Singles & Dating

I am 41 years old and single. By the time I found out I had diabetes, I realized that my ED was not due to stress. Viagra and Cialis prescribed by a urologist didn't help, and my problem isn't psychological as I no longer get morning erections (a telltale sign).

My desire or libido have not been affected; I can still climax, and I know plenty of other ways to pleasure my partner. But I'm getting mixed signals about the importance of an erection and penetration to women, and the thought of the pain of being rejected early in a relationship has made me stop dating altogether.

This detail is pretty much unavoidable, it's bound to come up on the third or fourth "real" date just when things start getting heavy but before there's been a real commitment.

Is a healthy long-term relationship possible, or will most women turn away before they get too involved emotionally? Do I keep dating or should I buy twelve cats and stock up on a lifetime supply of frozen dinners for one?

You just need to find the right woman and as you know there is far more to sex/love making then penetration. I realize that it is very hard to face rejection, but in order to be happy and feel fulfilled you need to find the right woman and you can't do that if you aren't dating. Just be open and honest. I suggest you get a little friend to help you with those women who do want penetration. Or surprise them with a big one. Good Luck. Live Life to the Fullest and Enjoy Every Minute of It.....

Man threatened by other men?

Dec 31, 2008 by The 0ne | Posted in Mental Health

So my mother in law, has a boyfriend. He hates her son, he made her get a restraining order against the last husband who was never violent or abusive. He despises me, is completely passive aggressive, violent with his own son to the point of holding him down and threatening to beat him.

He is very threatened by other men and treats the women in the family different. He did one time threaten to assault a 17 year old girl to the point of getting in her face. He constantly is verbally abusive with my sister in law who is 18 now but this was when she was 17 then. He does this as a joke, but it is thinly veiled passive aggressive behavior.

My mother in law pretends she doesn't notice it and that it is harmless. He festoons pseudo masculinity constantly, buying a motorcycle he cannot afford and taking Viagra. Was in the military and is obsessed with trinkets and trappings of death, you can tell he feels really manly even though he saw no combat as the mail man. He insults my wifes uncle constantly who suffers from depleted uranium poisoning, spouting pseudo science about it not being real.

There has to be a psychological designation for him, because this is unwarranted mentally ill behavior. Everyone has been very nice to him and I have tried to engage him yet he has been nothing but rude to me and my wife.

I need to understand him better, because I am really 50/50 about just smashing his face in. There really is no other way to deal with a bully besides that. Ignoring it is not an option.

All I can say is he seems a real d**K and if you want to smash his face in go for it, it seems he is asking for it, I hate bullies so go and do him in! Good Luck.

Relationship bonds?

Mar 26, 2007 by Ben B | Posted in Singles & Dating

Ok this question is going to directly take on a woman's commitment. (sorry, I don't know how to ask it niceley.) I read these forums and listen to people in real life and on the TV and radio; talk about how strong their bond is and how much they love each other.

I'll then hear a different story of how the sex in the relationship has to be of a certain degree. "Gotta test drive before you buy. etc."

So let's pose this question: You meet an awesome man, the sex is great= awesome, love, relationship, marriage, ok ok. Something happens(an accident,) that renders him completely incapable of having sex. Viagra is not going to save the day.

So despite all the "I love you with all my heart," marriage, "we're there for each other, no matter what." How many of you will now leave?

It just seems to go against the "guys only want sex from me" statements. Even now we have stories comming out of military men, with spouses/GF's that are leaving/cheating.

I could never imagine leaving just because my man was handicapped. Women who do that are pathetic and obviously don't know what love is. Sex is nice, but there are always things you can do for yourself to get your fill in that area. Love means you take the good with the bad.

We Always Have The LOWEST Pharmacy Online-Offers - Lowest price ...

It's hard to write about Afghanistan with any kind of accuracy because only approximately 7% of Americans even actually know where the place is — let alone know anything about what is actually going on there. I mean seriously. How many of us have taken the time to read about Afghanistan in Wikileaks or even USA Today? And how many of us have even actually been there? It's not as if Afghanistan was Hawaii or Cancun.

But I still want to write about Afghanistan anyway — even if it does mean having to do some actual research. But why would I want to do that? Easy answer there — because most of the taxes that Americans pay will eventually end up in Afghanistan, not Cancun. So let's follow the money.

According to journalist Tom Engelhardt, “While Americans fight bitterly over whether the stimulus package for the domestic economy was too large or too small, few in the U.S. even notice that the American stimulus package in Kabul, Islamabad, Baghdad, and elsewhere in our embattled Raj is going great guns. Embassies the size of pyramids are still being built; military bases to stagger the imagination continue to be constructed; and nowhere, not even in Iraq, is it clear that Washington is committed to packing up its tents, abandoning its billion-dollar monuments, and coming home.”
